Living Finish vs Patinated Brass: Understanding the Difference

For designers, architects and specifiers, understanding how a finish will perform after installation is just as important as its appearance at the point of specification. This is particularly true when comparing Living Finish and Patinated Brass, two finishes that offer distinct advantages depending on the project requirements.

WHAT IS LIVING FINISH?

A Living Finish is an unlacquered brass finish designed to develop character over time. Without a protective lacquer, the brass remains exposed to its environment, allowing it to respond naturally to touch, moisture and everyday use.

Aged slightly to begin with, the finish develops a unique patina which amplifies with age, as well as other patternations forming with time and use, meaning no two pieces will evolve in exactly the same way. Variations between products and installations are therefore an inherent characteristic of the finish and form part of its appeal.

For projects seeking authenticity and individuality, a Living Finish offers a surface that continues to tell its own story long after installation.

WHAT IS PATINATED BRASS?

Patinated Brass is a matt-lacquered finish that captures the depth, warmth and character of naturally aged brass while maintaining a more consistent appearance over time.

The protective lacquer helps preserve the finish, reducing the effects of oxidation and everyday handling. Unlike a Living Finish, which continues to evolve after installation, Patinated Brass is designed to retain its appearance, providing greater predictability and consistency throughout the life of the project.

This makes it particularly well suited to projects where finish continuity is important, whether across multiple rooms, properties or larger-scale developments.

It’s worth noting that both Living Finish and Patinated Brass present a unique appearance in every case. The finishes can vary due to differences in origination of the brass, manufacturing processes and surface finish of the product design, (e.g. flat, rounded, textured etc) among other things; meaning that every product is one of a kind.

Neither finish is the better choice: they’re answers to different briefs. The right one depends on what the project calls for, and what the client values in the long run.
